Children's Health & Fitness ? State Finally Winning Fight Against ...

May 24th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From the Press Telegram?..

After years of dismal and discouraging data showing a seemingly inexorable rise in childhood obesity, recent research in California shows that the fight against this epidemic is finally starting to pay off.

Late last year, a joint study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy found that not only had the increase in childhood obesity stopped, the rate had even started to fall slightly. Whereas the percentage of overweight and obese children in California peaked at 38.5 percent in 2005, the researchers found that by 2010 the proportion had dipped to 38 percent. While a slight decrease, this reversal is significant given the year-after-year rise up until the mid-2000s.

The study?s authors noted that the improvement was spotty throughout the state. Some counties, such as Alameda, Contra Costa and Kern, saw increases in childhood obesity rates. In Kern, for instance, between 2005 and 2010, the percentage of overweight or obese children rose from 41.4 percent to 43.8, a 2.4 percent increase. In contrast, however, other counties saw marked declines.

Mammoth Los Angeles County, which always seems to be the punchline of jokes about how bad California is performing in any given category, actually had a greater decrease in childhood obesity than the state as a whole. In 2005, 42.6 percent of Los Angeles students studied were overweight or obese. By 2010, that percentage had fallen to 41.5 percent, more

Green Blog: On the Horizon, a Northern Lights Extravaganza

The photographer Ole C. Salomonsen first saw the northern lights while growing up in the northern Norwegian city of Troms?, where auroras appear every winter.

?When I was a child, my parents and my grandparents would tell me that if you wave at the northern lights for too long, they will come after you,? he said.

Today Mr. Salomonsen chases auroras for a living, spending countless sleepless nights waiting to capture them so he can share them with the rest of the world. Right now he?s excited about a phenomenon called the solar maximum, when the sun?s activity is so high that it causes auroras to appear more often and in places where they usually don?t occur. The next solar maximum is expected in 2013, and to call attention to it, he recently released a stop-motion video called ?Celestial Lights.?

?I want to make people aware that the sun will cause faster and more aggressive auroras,? Mr. Salomonsen said. ?More people will be able to witness the northern lights, not just those of us up north.?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occur when the earth?s atmosphere comes into contact with particles from the sun. The earth?s magnetic field then drives these particles toward the North and South poles, which is why the northern lights are normally seen in places like Alaska, Canada and northern Europe.

But every 11 years, the northern lights can be seen farther south, in places like England or the United States, when the sun reaches its most active phase. At this point of the solar cycle, the north and south poles of the sun flip, and more sunspots and flares occur. NASA scientists predict that the sun will hit solar maximum next year.

Mr. Salomonsen?s video opens with an ominous musical score composed by Kai-Anders Ryan as the camera homes in on a tumultuous sun and its lunging flares.

?I included the solar maximum to put some story to it, to show the eruption of the sun as the source of the northern lights,? the photographer said. ?The sun is getting angrier, so the auroras are getting angrier and more dramatic.?

From October to March, Mr. Salomonsen spent many nights shooting more than 150,000 stills of auroras soaring above Scandinavian mountains and valleys. About 6,000 of these stills went into the production of ?Celestial Lights.?

Hunting for auroras isn?t easy. Before heading out, he checks the weather forecast and a university Web site that monitors the earth?s geomagnetic activity, which can predict the level of solar activity on a given night. If there are clear skies and indications of high solar activity, he bundles up, packs some coffee and prepares for a long night of driving and waiting in the dark.

With the video, his main challenge was to show the auroras moving as close to their actual speeds as possible.

While some auroras move as fast as lightning, that is not the norm, Mr. Salomonsen said. ?Many tourists who come to see the northern lights get disappointed because they think that?s how auroras move,? he said. ?They can move fast, but most of the time, they move very slowly and majestically.?

Although Mr. Salomonsen has been shooting auroras for many years, he did not seriously pursue photography until 2007, when he left his job as an equity broker and started his business, Arctic Light Photo. His work, particularly his two aurora videos, has gathered a wide following: ?Celestial Lights? has been viewed 279,000 times in the last month.

Still, he believes the auroras are best appreciated when people venture out and see them for themselves. Although they are present year-round, they are most visible in Norway from December to early February.

?No matter how good a photo or video is, you could never use that to justify not seeing the auroras with your own eyes, if you are lucky enough to get the chance,? he said.

Wrongful convictions can be reduced through science, but tradeoffs exist

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? Many of the wrongful convictions identified in a report this week hinged on a misidentified culprit -- and a new report in a top journal on psychological science reveals the paradox of reforms in eyewitness identification procedure. In our efforts to make sure that good guys don't get locked up, we could let more bad guys go.

In the May issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, leading scholars in psychology and the law explore and debate various aspects of eyewitness identification procedures, providing a scientific foundation for this important social issue.

In recent years, researchers and policymakers have called for specific reforms to eyewitness identification procedures that would help to reduce the rate of false identification. These reforms affect various aspects of identification procedure, including how lineups are constructed, what witnesses are told prior to the lineup, and how police officers should behave during the procedure.

Such procedural reforms are often viewed as having 'no cost' -- they reduce the false identification rate without affecting the correct identification rate. But psychological scientist Steven Clark (University of California, Riverside) argues that 'no cost' view may not actually be true. After extensive review of the existing data, Clark points out the paradoxical tradeoffs to reforms in eyewitness identification procedure. Existing data suggest that when we choose to enact reforms that are designed to reduce false identifications, we may also reduce the number of correct identifications at the same time.

But this tradeoff does not tell the whole story, say Gary Wells (Iowa State University), Nancy Steblay (Augsburg College), and Jennifer Dysart (John Jay College of Criminal Justice). While reform procedures may reduce the number of 'hits,' they do so by minimizing the influence of suggestive and coercive practices, such as biased instructions and cues from lineup administrators. Wells and his co-authors argue that the so-called 'lost' hits aren't actually relevant, because hits that result from suggestive practices are not legitimate identifications. Eryn Newman from Victoria University of Wellington and Elizabeth Loftus from the University of California, Irvine agree, arguing that eyewitness identification evidence should be based solely on the independent memory of the witness, not on the results of suggestive or coercive procedures.

There is, however, a scientifically valid way to compare witness-identification procedures, say John Wixted and Laura Mickes, both of the University of California, San Diego. If we identify the procedures that reliably differentiate between innocent and guilty suspects over time and across different situations, we will be able to determine which techniques are diagnostically superior to others.

Until we have such comprehensive data, the best way to protect innocent defendants, says Larry Laudan of the University of Texas, is by clearly communicating the fact that eyewitness identifications, regardless of their format, are fallible. According to Laudan, we now have enough empirical data to be able to inform jurors about the error profiles of various eyewitness identification procedures. Sharing this information, he argues, is more important than trying to arrive at "the one unique and definitive format for conducting identifications."

In the end, Clark points out that the goal of his article is not to argue for or against any particular witness identification procedure. Rather, he hopes to create strong links between social science data and public policy. "To the extent that social science research has a useful role in shaping policy decisions," says Clark, "social scientists must do for policymakers what they do best and what policymakers cannot do for themselves: conduct careful studies, and provide a clear and complete analysis of the empirical data."
