Steady steps forward in hub of innovation ? Generation Emigration

WILD GEESE: M?ire Walsh, Next Steps Marketing, California?Work hard and don?t be afraid to ask for help is the advice of one Irish emigrant who has made a career in marketing in the US

M?ire Walsh was down to her last $100 before finally landing a job in the US and she hasn't looked back

HAVING GROWN up with a love for Ireland?s western seaboard, M?ire Walsh travelled to California 10 years ago for a short break. But the Pacific coast, with its rolling hills and jagged shoreline, reminded her of home and now she can?t imagine ever wanting to leave.

Armed with a postgraduate diploma from Limerick IT, a BA in business enterprise from the University of Wolverhampton, an MBS in marketing from NUI Galway and US citizenship from her mother, Walsh headed to San Francisco in 2002 to see what might happen.

?It?s hard not to fall in love with San Francisco,? she said. ?It was just voted the number one city in the world and it?s easy to see why. It?s so beautiful and so close to the ocean. When I first arrived here, it reminded me of Galway because of the diversity of culture and the way of life.

?It?s a hub of innovation. You have access to industry leaders, who are willing to share their insight; it is culturally diverse; as a food lover it?s a mecca, and within an hour you can be hiking in redwoods, driving down the Pacific highway, or be in wine country.?

California also promised greater opportunity. Although she struggled for some months, going down to her last $100 before finally landing a job, her career soon gained momentum.

?When I came over here first, I was probably down for a while,? she said. ?I think it?s quite a tough city at first. Accommodation is expensive. It?s a shock actually. But I took a job in a magazine and, even though the pay wasn?t great, I thought, ?I?ll gain experience?.?

Her career began to soar when she moved to the Independent Press Association, a non-profit group that offered marketing, business and content advice to fledgling magazines.

?It was founded many years ago,? she said. ?It provided loans at reduced interest rates and advice. I was a consultant on the go-to-market strategy for these publications.?

From there she went to Next Steps Marketing, specialists in developing online and print audiences for magazines. After three years she was made a partner and now concentrates on offering strategic consulting to build and engage audiences.

?We create a product that is different for magazines. You can?t just convert your print product into digital and expect people to pay for it. It has to be interactive and use the potential the internet provides.?

She works with major international brands such as Amazon and Barnes Noble, working out content and marketing strategy that works across all platforms. In recent years, Walsh has become heavily involved with the Exceptional Women in Publishing (EWIP) group.

This non-profit organisation was set up in 1998 to educate, empower and support women in publishing. Walsh was recently elected president.

?When I first arrived here 10 years ago, EWIP put on this lunch and I thought it was very powerful,? she said. ?There was a woman speaker for a big publishing company in San Francisco and she was talking about the business side and how we can create new business strategies.

?As a young person just starting on my career, I thought: ?You can be a woman and rise to the top?.?

The group?s annual conference features women executives from leading media companies including Facebook, Google, Time Inc, Dwell Media, LinkedIn, ESPN and Twitter.

?Ninety per cent of the people who come to the conference are women,? said Walsh. ?There?s a different feel because women like to share more and give advice and will help others no matter what age or position they are in. The fact is all these women are smart and they are doing stuff. We need to promote that and honour these women who have worked hard to get where they are.?

For young people starting out on their careers, Walsh has

some time-honoured advice: work hard.

?Ask for help,? she adds. ?People, if they have the time, are more than happy to help. Connect with people who you know or friends of friends. LinkedIn is a leading tool here for building a network and for introducing people so set one up and build your account.

?If you are here on a one-year visa, make the most of it. Unless you add real value to an organisation, there will be no opportunity to stay longer.?

Superstorm Sandy lashed the Eastern United States as it made landfall along the New Jersey coast, packing torrential rains and wind gusts and knocking out electricity to millions.

The initial impact was severe: making rivers out of coastal roads, forcing those who waited too long to be rescued by boats or fearfully ride out. Power was out for hundreds of thousands in New York City and an estimated 6.2 million across the East. Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day ? the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888. Schools and public transportation were closed and city streets were abandoned as the storm moved over a region of 50 million.

(AP) ? Smart pitching. Clutch hitting. Sharp fielding. Plus an MVP Panda.

All the right elements for a sweet World Series sweep for the San Francisco Giants.

Nearly knocked out in the playoffs time and time again, and finally pressed by the Detroit Tigers in Game 4, Pablo Sandoval and the Giants clinched their second title in three seasons Sunday night.

Marco Scutaro ? who else? ? delivered one more key hit this October, a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning that lifted the Giants to a 4-3 win.

"Detroit probably didn't know what it was in for," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "Our guys had a date with destiny."

On a night of biting cold, stiff breezes and some rain, the Giants combined the most important elements of championship baseball. After three straight wins that looked relatively easy, they sealed this victory when Sergio Romo got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to look at strike three for the final out.

"Tonight was a battle," Giants star Buster Posey said. "And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it because those guys played hard. They didn't stop, and it's an unbelievable feeling."

Posey, the only player who was in the starting lineup when San Francisco beat Texas in the 2010 clincher, and the underdog Giants celebrated in the center of the diamond at Comerica Park.

They built toward this party all month, winning six elimination games this postseason. In the clubhouse, they hoisted the trophy, passed it around and shouted the name of each player who held it.

"World Series champions!" Giants outfielder Hunter Pence hollered.

A total team triumph.

"When pitching is your strength, you want a good defense," manager Bruce Bochy said. "That shows up every day. ... Hitting sometimes, it comes and goes. But as long as you can stay in more games, the better chance you have of winning them, and that's how we play."

Benched during the 2010 Series, Sandoval, nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, went 8 for 16, including a three-homer performance in Game 1.

"You learn," Sandoval said. "You learn from everything that happened in your career. ... We're working hard to enjoy this moment right now."

Cabrera delivered the first big hit for Detroit, interrupting San Francisco's run of dominant pitching with a two-run homer that blew over the right-field wall in the third.

Posey put the Giants ahead 3-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth and Delmon Young hit a tying home run in the bottom half.

It then became a matchup of bullpens, and the Giants prevailed.

Ryan Theriot led off the 10th with a single against Phil Coke, moved up on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice and scored on a shallow single by Scutaro, the MVP of the NL championship series. Center fielder Austin Jackson made a throw home, to no avail.

"That's what makes it so much special, the way we did it," Scutaro said. "We're always against the wall and my team, it just came through first series, second series and now we sweep the Tigers."

Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th for his third save of the Series.

The Giants finished the month with seven straight wins and their seventh Series championship. They handed the Tigers their seventh straight World Series loss dating to 2006.

"Obviously, there was no doubt about it. They swept us," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "So there was certainly no bad breaks, no fluke.

"Simple, they did better than we did," he said. "It was freaky. I would have never guessed we would have swept the Yankees and I would have never guessed the Giants would have swept us."

The Giants combined for a 1.42 ERA, outscored the Tigers 16-6 and held them to a .159 batting average.

"I think we never found our confidence at home plate," Cabrera said. "It was not the same game we played. We could not find our game in the World Series."

Bristled slumping Tigers slugger Prince Fielder: "This is not about me. This is about the team."

An NL team won the title for the third straight season, a run that hadn't occurred in 30 years. Some find the streak surprising, considering the AL's recent dominance in interleague play. Yet as every fan knows, the club that pitches best in the postseason usually prevails.

Until the end, the Tigers thought one big hit could shift the momentum. It was an all-too-familiar October lament ? Texas felt the same way when the Giants throttled it in 2010, and the Tigers knew the feeling when St. Louis wiped them out in 2006.

"For one, we didn't allow doubt to ever creep in," Pence said. "You know, the thing that made this team so special is just playing as a team, caring for each other. We had our backs against the wall and we knew it wasn't going to be easy. It's not supposed to be."

Howling winds made it feel much colder than the 44 degrees at gametime. Two wrappers blew across home plate after leadoff man Angel Pagan struck out, and fly balls played tricks in the breeze.

The Giants started with their pregame ritual. They clustered around Pence in the dugout, quickly turning into a bobbing, whooping, pulsing pack, showering themselves with sunflower seeds. A big league good-luck charm, Little League style.

"That was one of our mottos, and we went out there to enjoy every minute of it and it was hard earned. Just an incredible, incredible group of guys that fought for each other," Pence said.

Once again, San Francisco took an early lead. Pence hit a one-hop drive over the center-field fence for a double and Brandon Belt tripled on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second.

The next inning, Cabrera gave the Tigers a reason to think this might be their night.

With two outs and a runner on first, Cabrera lofted an opposite-field fly to right ? off the bat, it looked like a routine out shy of the warning track. But with winds gusting over 25 mph, the ball kept carrying, Pence kept drifting toward the wall and the crowd kept getting louder.

Just like that, it was gone.

Cabrera's homer gave Detroit its first lead of the Series, ended its 20-inning scoreless streak and reaffirmed a pregame observation by Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline.

"The wind usually blows to right at this time of year," Kaline said.

In the fourth, Max Scherzer and catcher Gerald Laird teamed on a strike 'em out-throw 'em out double play.

Trailing for the first time since Game 4 of the NL championship series, Posey and the Giants put a dent in Detroit's optimism. Scutaro led off the sixth with a single and clapped all the way around the bases when Posey sent a shot that sailed just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-2 lead.

Detroit wasn't about to go quietly, however. Young, the ALCS MVP against the Yankees, made it 3-all with another opposite-field homer to right, this one a no-doubt drive.

Fielder finished 1 for 14 (.071) against the Giants without an RBI. Minus key hits, the Tigers remained without a title since 1984.

All 24 teams to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series have won it all. In fact, none of those matchups even reached a Game 6. This was the first sweep for an NL team since Cincinnati in 1990.

Working on nine days' rest and trying to extend the Tigers' season, Scherzer kept them close into the seventh. Often recognized for his eyes ? one is light blue, the other is brown ? he's also known as a solid postseason pitcher.

Ditto-plus for Matt Cain, who was working on a nearly perfect year.

The Giants' ace threw a perfect game in June, was the winning pitcher in the All-Star game in July, beat Cincinnati to clinch the division series and topped St. Louis in Game 7 of the NL championship series.

After they left, the relievers decided it.

Octavio Dotel shouted, "Yeah! Let's go!" toward his dugout after striking out Posey to end the eighth. In the bottom half, winning pitcher Jeremy Affeldt got around a leadoff walk when he struck out Cabrera, a flinching Fielder and Young.

Coke returned the favor in the top of the ninth, fanning the side. With Jose Valverde having lost his closer role during a shaky month, Coke stayed in for the 10th and faltered.

The Giants became the first champion that hit the fewest home runs in the majors since St. Louis in 1982. Sandoval's three drives in Game 1 started San Francisco's romp, and its dominant pitching took over from there.

The parade to a sweep masked the problems San Francisco overcame to get this far.

Closer Brian Wilson pitched only two innings before an elbow injury ended his year. All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games for a positive testosterone test, and not welcomed back when the ban ended. Two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum struggled and wound up in the bullpen.

Swept in a three-game set at Arizona to start the season, the Giants were floundering under .500 in mid-May. They soon hit their stride and, boosted by trade deadline deals for Scutaro and Pence, passed the Dodgers in the NL West for good in late August and posted 94 wins.

Getting past Cincinnati and St. Louis in the playoffs presented challenges. Down 2-0 in the best-of-five division series, they rallied for three straight victories in Cincinnati. Trailing the defending champion Cardinals 3-1 in the NLCS, they again took three in a row to advance, clinching in a driving rainstorm.

Six elimination games, six wins. Facing the Tigers, San Francisco proved it could play with a lead, too.

The Giants became the first NL team since the Big Red Machine in the mid-1970s to win two titles in a three-year span. Shut out for 56 years ? Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds never won it all ? their self-described "misfits" captured that elusive crown in 2010.

The Tigers' flop finished off a season in which Cabrera became baseball's first Triple Crown winner since 1967. Detroit overtook the White Sox in the final week to win the AL Central and wound up 88-74, the AL's seventh-best record.

NOTES: Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Santiago Casilla in the ninth. ... Theriot and Laird had a nice reunion at the plate. They were St. Louis teammates last year when the Cardinals won the title. ... Laird started after Alex Avila was scratched. Avila's right arm was still sore after being hit by a foul tip in the opener. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... Cabrera has reached base in all 24 of his postseason games with Detroit. ... Only two of the last nine World Series have gone longer than five games.

Indian state's industrial dream mired in delays, protests

ANGUL, India (Reuters) - A few hundred meters from the high walls and barbed wire guarding billionaire Naveen Jindal's upcoming steel plant, a dozen men have gathered at a tea stall. Their plan for this and every day: disrupt any attempt by Jindal's company to lay a water pipeline.

The men, from villages near Angul in India's Odisha state, have twice scuttled efforts to lay the pipeline in protest against Jindal Steel & Power's unwillingness to increase compensation and offer permanent jobs for taking over their land.

"The company doesn't come clean on exact terms. Revenue officials say: let work get done, we will resolve this later," says Sukanta Kumar Pradhan, the sarpanch, or headman, of Kankarai village. "What else can we do?"

Jindal's biggest project, which will eventually comprise a 12 million tonne per annum steel plant and a 2,400 MW power plant, is hampered by a barrage of protests by displaced locals, stalled mining approvals and delays in environmental clearances.

The project, estimated to cost $10 billion, is one of several that are similarly held up in the state. Tata Steel, India's largest private steel-maker, has scaled back plans announced in 2004 to build a $6.3 billion plant. The downsized project is slated to be completed in 2014.

A $12 billion steel plant to be built by South Korea's POSCO, agreed in 2005, has been stalled for years.

Odisha, formerly called Orissa, lies in the heart of India's mining belt and holds a third of the country's iron ore reserves, a quarter of its coal, half its bauxite and more than 90 percent of its nickel and chromite. The state accounted for about a fifth of all industrial investment proposals in India in the last four years.

Since January 2008, Odisha has attracted investment proposals worth $210 billion. Besides Tata, Jindal and POSCO, investors include global heavyweights such as ArcelorMittal and Vedanta Resources.

In addition to the mineral wealth, Odisha lies on India's east coast and provides easier access to the sea than other mineral-rich areas in the interior.

But Odisha is also one of India's poorest states, plagued for decades by Maoist groups that use violence to destroy infrastructure and disrupt industry.

Most industrial projects have been stalled over land acquisition issues, accusations of corruption, environmental violations and a popular backlash against industry. Some have been dramatically scaled back.

"It's broadly a reaction to the kind of business practices that have been done in these areas previously," Jahangir Aziz, senior Asia Economist at JP Morgan, said of the backlash that has resulted in delays.

"It is focused on land acquisition and environmental violations, but the underlying reason is that there has been unfettered mining that has impacted livelihoods. That is why people are far more cautious."

MINERAL-RICH, POVERTY-STRICKEN

Since it first made a push to attract industry in the late 1990s, the number of people in Odisha living in poverty, defined as earning less than $13 a month, has fallen to around 40 percent of its 42 million people from close to 50 percent. Overall, India's 1.2 billion people had a poverty level of 30 percent in 2010 and Odisha counts among the poorest of its 28 states.

Industrial projects were expected to generate employment, but not enough locals can do the work, meaning large groups such as Jindal and Tata must source more than a third of their skilled labor elsewhere.

"The prime attraction of industry for people is employment, but that is not materializing," said Biswajit Mohanty, an environmental activist.

Odisha will be short of 4 million skilled workers by 2026, an Ernst & Young study predicts.

Many residents also complain they don't get adequate compensation for their land, that water is diverted from farming to industrial projects, and that, in general, there is a big gap between what is promised to displaced persons and what is delivered.

"There is no connect with people's needs," Mohanty said.

By comparison, more developed states like Maharashtra or Gujarat, in western India, have been able to advance industrialization with popular support, he said.

POLITICAL WILL

Critics have long argued Odisha's pro-industry policies are biased towards large companies, and its eagerness to sign agreements opens it to corruption. That can in part explain a project-implementation ratio of only 39 percent, compared with a national average of 45 percent, estimated by ProjectsToday, a local industry magazine.

"They are simply looking to garner cheap minerals for their long-term benefits," said Mohanty, who has dragged several companies, including Vedanta Aluminum, Jindal and Essar Steel to courts or regulators over alleged violations.

Opposition politicians and environmental activists in the state blame Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has been in office for nearly 13 years and is widely described as autocratic, for mishandling the push to industrialize. Patnaik, who leads the regional Biju Janata Dal party, did not reply to interview requests.

Sahadev Sahoo, a former chief secretary, the top bureaucrat in the state, said the local government does not have the resources to communicate the benefits of industrial projects to local people:

"The land issue should be handled by political parties through their ground-level workers, not by bureaucrats," he said.

GAME OF PERSEVERANCE

Outside Jindal's Angul plant, villagers have again used peaceful protests to block the pipeline, a course of action they will continue until demands are met, the headman, Pradhan, said.

Jindal in turn, says it has settled displacement issues on most of the area for its scaled-down 6 million-tonne steel plant and 900 MW power plant and has paid an additional amount to villagers.

"The delay in (the) project is due to several other reasons whereby land sellers, even after receiving their compensation, demand more price retrospectively," the company said in an e-mail. It has previously blamed "vested interests" for blocking the water line, media reports said.

About 130 km (90 miles) away, Tata Steel's Kalinganagar plant is under construction after years of delay.

After eight years and huge cost-overruns, it is still struggling to displace settlers and has no mining approvals. Faced with surging demand, Tata started work on a 3 million-tonne unit -- half the originally planned size -- which it hopes to complete by 2014.

Odisha has asked others, including POSCO, whose long-stalled steel plant has come to symbolize the frustrations of foreign industrial investors in India, to scale back plans in order to get projects back on track.

"We are looking at how project sizes can be reduced, existing acquired land be used, or any other solution found," said Rajanikant Singh, Odisha's steel and mines minister.

While the problems are particularly acute in Odisha, neighboring mineral-rich areas are similarly affected.

In Chattisgarh state, second only to Odisha in garnering investment proposals, dreams of turning into a power-hub are gradually evaporating, with only a fraction of the planned 60 power projects likely to be operational soon.

It has turned to non-mining industries and recently held roadshows to attract investment in sectors such as information technology, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing.

Scores of projects in neighboring Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand are also languishing due to delays in land acquisition or mining clearances.

"It's a game of patience and perseverance," said Sajjan Jindal, chairman of JSW Steel, whose project in neighboring West Bengal has been stalled over mining approvals. "The large projects will definitely come. When, I can't say."

One thing worse than socialist Obamacare: removing it and not ...

Perhaps the worst part of the Affordable Care Act, aside from the communism and socialism, is that it fooled some folks into thinking that government had actually fixed what ails America.

It's clear now that it didn't. In fact, it's clear the law didn't actually accomplish what it intended to accomplish, namely spreading coverage and driving costs down. Instead, it managed only one of those and not very well.

As a bonus, the one it sort of accomplished -- spreading coverage by turning insurance companies into willing agents of public policy -- is also the one that will accelerate the descent of the federal budget into chaos and deficit.

We could privatize Social Security and convert Medicare into a Ponzi scheme tomorrow, and it wouldn't prevent the reckoning we're due thanks to rising medical costs.

By the end of the next president's term, America will spend about 20 percent of its gross domestic product on health care -- one-fifth of the U.S. economy devoted to the upkeep of Americans. That reflects the relative importance of medicine in modern life, not to mention that aging and declining Boomers have ensured that health care has supplanted education in the pantheon of public goods.

In any case, we're getting lousy value. America spends more than any other developed nation, and our results are -- at best -- middling in infant mortality, life expectancy, cancer fatalities and deaths from heart disease.

The U.S. has the greatest health facilities in the world, but most of us will spend our lives and deaths without ever seeing them. Most will be born in local hospitals and die -- expensively, painfully, alone -- in similar facilities.

We will go to doctors who provide adequate care in fragmentary visits driven by illness and insult. They will not know who we are because they can't. They don't have time.

Doctors and hospitals account for 51 percent of total health care spending in America. The rest is divided among pharmaceuticals, insurance, nursing home care. All totaling more than $2.3 trillion a year in 2010, according to the Kaiser Foundation.

With the Affordable Care Act, that number will grow faster than inflation over the next decade. Without it, the number will grow at about the same pace, and more people will die because they don't have insurance.

Those are the extremes, sadly, of the presidential race. President Barack Obama clings to health care reform not because he thinks it's a good law -- nobody does -- but because it is an accomplishment.

Mitt Romney promises to repeal Obamacare not because he thinks it's a bad law (something indistinguishable was his most significant accomplishment as governor of Massachusetts) but because it's unpopular.

What neither man promises -- because it's laughable on its face -- is that either approach can fix the health care problem. In fact, both men have traded an argument over a law for the argument over the problem.

Obama's solution is to stick with reform, with all its cowardices about cost control and all its inadequacies in extending coverage.

He'll stick with it despite the fact that it's a giveaway to the insurance industry massive by comparison even with President George W. Bush's gift to drug companies.

He'll stick with it despite the fact that Obamacare doesn't affect the cost trajectory of medicine in America, at least not noticeably.

Romney's solution is to repeal the law on Day One of his term, essentially returning the nation to the state of medicine before health care reform. That means at least 40 million Americans without coverage, a scandal in the civilized world.

Repealing the law also means kids tossed off their parents' policies, illness and preexisting conditions as an excuse to deny coverage, and rapacious insurance companies again allowed to make whatever profits the market allows.

Romney has said over and over that he'll keep those popular protections. But the only way to do so while abandoning the rest of the Affordable Care Act is by making health care even more expensive than it is now.

That leaves us with awful choices on the most important issue of our time, 10 days before the election: A president who clings to an overly complicated law so incoherent that it doesn't do what it's supposed to. And his opponent, who promises only to take a bad situation and make it worse.

Obamacare needs to be repaired or replaced, but not with nothing. Our rabies-mad politics make that an especially difficult task. Especially since fixing the faults of the American medical system -- cost and coverage -- requires a radical re-examination of how health care is delivered. Anything less amounts to malpractice.

Claire discusses why no one will be getting a tattoo of a dog and a record player.?

The other day I read something that truly brought my piss to a boil, so much so that I?ve found myself having to write a piece about it. This story comes after a lovely television show last week titled My Tattoo Addiction, which essentially made out those with extensive body art to be either lunatics obsessed with Miley Cyrus or drunken holiday makers. Now it has been announced that our lovely friends at HMV are now implementing a new ?appearance policy,? banning extensive body art and piercings from being on show, as well as putting a stop to staff members having long haircuts.

I might just be biased because I?m tattooed, but how the hell does being tattooed, pierced or having long hair affect the way that someone does their job? The music industry and record shops have long been a place where alternative-looking folk have chosen to work, and now it seems we?re even being ostracised from them, too. Clearly we are all just thuggish hooligans who don?t deserve jobs, eh?

Shouldn?t HMV be spending their time on more important things? Like finding effective ways of earning back the massive amount of money they?ve lost over the last couple of years? Of course, they?re saying that they are doing this because of the customers, and yet they clearly haven?t realised that majority of people who spend money in there are actually long-haired, pierced and tattooed, considering that Britain is possibly the most tattooed country in the world.

Given that people with tattoos are obviously no longer welcome in HMV stores, I give them a year before they?ve closed down. Way to go HMV! Fuckwads.

I Sobbed on My Birthday As My Friend Told Me She Wasn't Sure If I ...

image

Crying makes friendship stronger. So does life kicking you in the vagina.

?

What did I do for my birthday? So glad you asked.

Well, the day before my birthday I celebrated in the traditional way: by violating a promise to a really good male friend of mine, who made me vow to cut the cord on this tenuous, tortured, stupid-idiotic-WTF non-relationship I was having with this Clever Sexy Guy -- someone who I had seen for a bit and who was making me crazy. Or to be more accurate: someone who I was choosing to let into my life and feel crazy about. I mean, he didn't make me do dick. Every action of a mine is a choice. I get that. My actions were showing what I thought about my own worth loud and clear. Boundaries? I'm sorry, you lost me.

So. As an incentive to protect my heart from ill-advised in-the-moment acting-out-of-fear-and-lust-and-impulse behavior, my dear male friend and I made a deal that he would punish me and not be my friend anymore if I engaged with Clever Sexy Guy, because it wasn't healthy and he was not treating me well. I needed to show myself I was valuable through my actions and who I let into my life, and that's what I promised my friend, too. But, lo and behold, when Clever Sexy Guy reached out via text the day before my birthday -- instead of deleting the texts as I promised, I engaged. (Oh, and that dear male friend said he knew this was going to happen. He's so damned smart. And still my friend, thankfully.)

That night Clever Sexy Guy and I talked on the phone for two hours. He said he wanted to date me. He said he cared about me. Of course, I recognized that I was mostly steam-engine pushing it, but he's one of the few people who make me laugh and who I have actually connected with since returning to New York; for me, that makes me feel alive and hopeful and like anything is possible. That is my crack. Possibility.

Clever Sexy Guy and I talked about meeting up in the evening on my birthday. It wasn't definite, but times were discussed. I was assuming it was a go since he kept telling me his plans and availability. He couldn't do actual dinner because he had a friend in town. Okay.

Early on my birthday, when the sweet girlfriend I was going to meet up with remembered she had a school commitment, she canceled, and I scrambled to figure out who I could have dinner with instead. Okay. And then I got an email saying that I did not now have the place in Bushwick I was planning to move to in a week. Okay.

I decided to do what anyone would in this situation. I went to Victoria's Secret and bought new lingerie.

Then I reached out. Happily, miraculously, a friend has come through with a place I can live in for a few months in Great Neck. God bless, real friends. Seriously.

And I reached out to my friend Jessica Delfino to see if she would have birthday dinner with me last minute. It was a nice dinner. Until we got to a confrontation that had been brewing. I had emailed someone who was really much more her professional contact than mine, and she thought boundaries were crossed. She was right. It was completely dodgy of me, and that's why I told her that I did it.

But then the conversation got weird. I said, "But you know that I'm a good person."

Jessica is someone who -- like me -- is very careful about giving trust to other people, and so she responded quite logically. "I honestly think we're still getting to know each other," she said.

As we spoke, as we had our dinner, I was wearing the new lingerie that I had bought because I was excited to see Clever Sexy Guy. But it was clear now. 8 p.m. became 9 p.m. became 10 p.m. It was certain he was bailing now, and not just bailing, but not even having the courtesy to text at all -- and so I deaded him for real this time.

It's the third time I've deleted him from my phone. But this time, I just felt excited. I felt like I had saved myself from wasted time with a guy who, when it really mattered -- like say on your birthday -- would treat me inconsiderately and like shit. I get that I'm annoying and aggressive (my final text -- before deleting him -- alluded to the "thoughtful gift" he better be getting me), but I also think that I ultimately protected myself with those kind of are-you-really-in-this-or-do-you-just-want-to-fuck-and-fool-around-and-be-casual shit tests. It's clear when a guy cares. He shows it. He engages.

Hell. You could buy a thoughtful gift for $5 if you wanted to. Thoughtful. Not expensive. And, a man you want to get involved with is consistent with you. He isn't a charming, remorseful, considerate person to you one day, and a selfish, inconsiderate, cold bastard the next.

So, I was sad, but this was a good final nail in the coffin. A nail in the coffin on this type of behavior of mine, too. Chasing men. Being the steam engine. It's not working for me with men. It's just not. I'm done. And it doesn't matter if someone makes me laugh or makes me feel a certain way; the treatment is what matters. Getting blown off on your birthday matters.?

At dinner with Jessica, while I did feel shitty about Clever Sexy Guy (rejection is perhaps the most painful human experience of them all), I was feeling even more terrible for nearly having screwed my friendship up with Jessica, for having done this crappy professional thing which I acknowledged to be a crappy thing -- overstepping boundaries with her contact.

I was apologizing a second time when the discussion morphed into that question of whether she believed in my innate "goodness" (which to me is just hitting old tapes of lovability and conditional love). And then, over a plate of nachos, I suddenly out of nowhere, not able to keep it together anymore, just broke out into full-on sobs. Not like crying. Sobbing. Body-wracking sobs.

"I...just...feel...so...sad," I gasped as all the people at the Mexican diner where we sat outside stared. I told her that here she was a person who I had asked to have a birthday meal with -- and she didn't even know if I was a good person or not. This was my life. It was too much.

Jessica said that she was just being protective of herself. She was stunned and moved by the rawness of my emotion. She apologized for having been thoughtless in not just immediately saying, "Of course I know you're a good person," and said she accepted my apology for what I had done, and then the sobbing somehow turned into laughter. It took a while for it turn into laughter, but it turned. And it felt like a weird-friend-grief-orgasm that bonded us in some way. That may sound strange, but it did. To me trust is having a friend that you can be real with, even when it isn't pretty.

"You are meant to date princes, Mandy," she said. "Sheiks and princes and leaders of the world. That's who is good enough for you."

We hugged tightly before she headed off into the night. It was a good birthday after all.
