Russian asteroid highlights astronomers' challenge: Predicting such space objects

Astronomers have cataloged about 95 percent of the space objects wider than half a mile?? those that could destroy civilization.?But they have found less than 1 percent of the objects 100 feet across or larger, a class that includes the asteroid that?flitted past Earth on Friday.

The unexpected appearance and explosion of a small asteroid over Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday highlights the challenges astronomers face as they try to get a better handle on the risk Earth faces from objects whose orbits bring them uncomfortably close to Earth, or even cross Earth's orbit.

In their hunt to identify such near-Earth objects wider than half a mile across ? potential civilization busters if one were to strike Earth ? astronomers have cataloged about 95 percent of the objects in this size class during the past 15 years.

But they have found less than 1 percent of the objects 100 feet across or larger, a class that includes the asteroid 2012 DA14. This object flitted past Earth Friday afternoon Eastern Standard Time a scant 17,200 miles from Earth ? a record for a known object of its size.

RECOMMENDED:?Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz

At 150 feet across, 2012 DA14 is comparable in size to the object that exploded over the Tunguska River in Siberia in 1908. The shock wave flattened 820 square miles of forest ? an area about the size of greater Tampa-St. Petersburg.

The asteroid over Russia's Chelyabinsk region Friday was smaller still, estimated to span about 50 feet and weigh about 7,000 metric tons before it exploded into fragments high above the ground. The shock wave shattered windows in three major cities in the region, damaged a zinc factory, and inflicted mostly minor injuries on more than 950 people.

Nobody saw the object coming.

It's enough to make some lawmakers wince. On Friday, Lamar Alexander (R) of Tennessee and chairman of the House Science Space, and Technology Committee, issued a statement regarding the two events which noted that the committee will hold hearings in the near future to explore ways to improve efforts to detect asteroids as well as to deal with any deemed a potential threat to the planet.

Given the size of the Chelyabinsk asteroid, astronomers estimate that an event like this occurs on average every 100 years. Yet smaller objects also can arrive with little or no warning, and explode in a loud, spectacular fashion, even with no damage on the ground. And they hit more frequently.

These surprise visitors are among the near-Earth objects that keep Kalait Ramesh awake at night.

"Historically, we've had relatively low population density. These things tended to happen in areas where nobody sees them or nobody remembers them," says Dr. Ramesh, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University whose studies of stress on various materials has led him to include asteroids in the mix of materials.

"But as our population's gone up, it's gotten to the point where these things can have a big impact. My biggest worry is that this will happen in a place where there is significant political instability or two countries on the verge of a war," he says.

Signs You Are Verbally Abused: Part I | Psych Central

Signs You Are Verbally Abused: Part INote: Issues of verbal control can exist in any relationship, heterosexual, gay or lesbian, male towards a female partner or the other way around. Since more is known about verbal abuse in relationships where a guy is controlling his female partner, this article will address those relationships. However, a simple change of gender in any of the names is all it takes to apply the principles to other pairs.

Verbal abuse takes many forms: from loud rants to quiet comments; from obvious put-downs to not-so-obvious remarks that undermine the partner. What all the methods have in common is the need to control, to be superior, to avoid taking personal responsibility, and to mask or deny failures.

The myth in Hank?s and Mary?s relationship is that he is much, much smarter than she is. She does admire him, but not as much as he admires himself. He trumps anything she says with a stronger, maybe louder opinion. He calls her ideas na?ve or ill-informed or even idiotic. Mary thinks he may be right. Since marrying Hank 3 years ago, her self-confidence has plummeted.

Jake, on the other hand, hides his need for control in his relationship with Marilyn under sarcasm, jokes and puns. ?Why,? he says, ?doesn?t Marilyn understand I?m just joking?? Why? Because she is the object of those sarcastic remarks, ?jokes? and puns. He both publicly and privately keeps her off-balance by joking about her insights, her goals, and the things she cares most about. She has come to question her judgment about her ideas and about him. Lots of people think he?s funny. Maybe, she thinks, he doesn?t mean it. Maybe, she tells herself, she needs to have a better sense of humor.

Frank can?t stand to be seen as responsible for any failure. When he makes a mistake, his mantra is ?I may be wrong but you are wrong-er.? If his wife says he has hurt her feelings, he claims not to remember having said what he said or having done what he did. He tells her she is ?too sensitive.? He whines about being a scapegoat for other people?s problems. He doesn?t seem to get that he is the perpetrator, not the victim.

Al isn?t subtle. His wife and kids never know what to expect when he comes home. Will loving, caring Al be at the door with treats for the kids and something nice for his wife? Or will the Al who flies into rages, who threatens them with physical abuse and swears and calls them names show up? The whole household walks on eggshells. Even when loving-Al is around, things can change in an instant if he is the least bit frustrated. Last week when his 5-year-old spilled milk at the dinner table, he yelled at her for an hour. When his wife tried to intervene, he backhanded her. Everyone got real quiet. Then ? the storm blew over and Al left for the rest of the evening.

If you recognize yourself in any of the above scenarios, you are being verbally abused. Make no mistake: Although verbal abuse doesn?t leave visible scars, it does do damage. The victims? self-esteem is eroded. Children who watch one parent being put down and diminished by the other develop a skewed and sad view of how relationships are supposed to be.

6 Signs You Are Being Verbally Abused

  1. Like Mary, you feel you just can?t win. No matter how carefully or kindly you try to work out a problem, your partner says things that make you feel like you?re in the wrong.
  2. Your self-esteem and self-confidence are shot. Your partner isn?t your greatest fan but your greatest critic. He often tells you that his comments are ?for your own good.?
  3. When you say he has hurt your feelings your partner, like Frank in the scene above, tells you that you are too sensitive. When you point out that he has said something inappropriate or hurtful, he accuses you of trying to make him look bad. You notice that he rarely takes responsibility for his part of a problem. Somehow he manages to convince himself and even you that anything that goes wrong is your fault.
  4. You often are the brunt of jokes that make you feel bad. The guy who is fun and fun-loving outside the family unleashes a more vicious or undermining humor inside. Other people don?t believe you that the guy they know is so different from what you experience. Like Marilyn, you find yourself constantly questioning yourself.
  5. You have to walk on eggshells at home. Your home isn?t a sanctuary for you and your kids. It is the place where you are most afraid and embarrassed. You and the kids stay away as much as you can. When you are there with your partner, you all do everything you can to make sure nothing happens that could set him off.
  6. If you?re not very careful, the verbal abuse escalates to physical altercations. Even if you are very careful, what starts with words can end up with physical aggression toward you or destroying things, especially things you value.

Whoever made up that rhyme about ?sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me? was just plain wrong! Words do hurt. They can break a person on the inside just as surely as a whack with a stick bruises the outside. People who are subjected to verbal abuse suffer. People who are subjected to it over time can get so used to it that they lose their sense of themselves as people worth loving. If you see yourself in any of these stories, know you are not alone. There are things you can do. Part II of this article will discuss them.

Carlisle nightclub struggling with debt problems closed

A Carlisle nightclub struggling with debt problems has closed.

Club Rock in Englishgate Plaza, off Botchergate in the city, shut its doors this week when the premises were emptied.

Its closure is the second blow to the city?s nightlife and entertainment scene in a week, after nearby Indian restaurant Teza stopped trading.

Club Rock, which opened in 2010, was put into liquidation after owner Dan Russell revealed it had run into debt.

The Newcastle-based insolvency practitioner firm which is handling the insolvency process, Robson Laidler, held meetings in Carlisle on Monday.

Khal Moulem, the city-based agent for the landlord which owns the Club Rock building, said: ?I understand a meeting was held and they went in and took the stock out. Club Rock is closed for the time being.?

The amounts owed by the two clubs have not been revealed by Mr Russell.

Cash problems also affect the Outrageous club in Lowther Arcade, another of the businessman?s interests.

It comes just six months after it was revealed that Mr Russell had battled his way back to health after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage.

He said the problems facing the clubs do not affect his other businesses, a martial arts school and property rental service.

Speaking to the News & Star earlier this month, he said: ?I don?t believe that Outrageous will close. I believe it will continue under new management. But I do doubt Club Rock will continue.?

Mr Russell blamed the financial problems with the latter club on the level of rent demanded by the building?s London-based landlord.

The creditors? meeting for Dan Russell and Atlas Developments Ltd, was held at the Hallmark Hotel on Monday.

A separate meeting concerning Outrageous was also held.

Teza closed its doors last week, with its entire contents spirited away in the middle of the night amid a bitter dispute over ?60,000 in rent and fixtures and fittings.

Burger King feels heat as rivals focus on value

(AP) ? A revamped menu helped boost Burger King's profit in the fourth quarter but now the world's second biggest hamburger chain says it needs to play up value more aggressively to compete with rivals.

The Miami-based chain said Friday that sales in the new year are trending "modestly negative" as the broader fast-food industry fights to attract cash-strapped diners with cheap eats.

To address the intensifying focus on value from competitors, Steve Wiborg, president of Burger King's North America operations, noted the company launched a limited-time offer for a Junior Whopper for $1.29 this week.

Although Burger King will continue to pursue a "barbell" strategy of also offering premium items, Wiborg said that for now it will be "a little more focused on value because of competitive pressures."

With the broader restaurant industry expected to be flat to modestly up this year, companies are going to greater lengths to convince people to eat out more. McDonald's, for example, has been underscoring its Dollar Menu to boost sales and recently added a Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger to the lineup. In some markets, the Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain is also offering six-piece Chicken McNuggets for a buck.

Wendy's also revamped its 99-cent menu to offer customers more variety, as well as giving it more wiggle room to charge slightly higher prices. The chain's new "Right Price, Right Size" menu has tiered pricing that goes up to around $2.

Meanwhile, Burger King CEO Bernardo Hees said that sales in Europe haven't been affected by the horsemeat scandal that has gripped the region. The scandal erupted after testing showed that various ground beef products, such as a frozen lasagna meal, actually contained horsemeat. But Hees said Burger King's sales in the United Kingdom have been up in January and February.

The remarks from Hees and Wiborg came after Burger King delivered a strong fourth-quarter results; its net income nearly doubled as a key sales figure rose in North America and the company shifted to a franchisee-owned store model that significantly slashed costs.

Adjusted earnings and revenue topped Wall Street's expectations. It also raised its dividend by 25 percent to 5 cents per share.

3G Capital, the private investment firm that owns a majority stake in the company, has been working to turn around Burger King's business since purchasing it in 2010.

The franchisee-owned store model is aimed at cutting down on overhead costs and boosting profit margins. At the end of the year, the company said it was 97 percent franchised, versus 90 percent at the end of 2011. It planned to be nearly fully franchised this year.

Burger King said revenue at locations open at least a year climbed 2.7 percent in the quarter, boosted by a 3.7 percent increase in the U.S. and Canada. By contrast, McDonald's Corp. had reported last month that the figure rose just 0.1 percent globally and 0.3 percent in the U.S.

Burger King said results in North America were helped by new menu items such as its chicken parmesan sandwich, Cinnabon Minibon rolls and its holiday sweets menu.

In the region encompassing Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the figure rose 1.6 percent. It edged up a more modest 0.7 percent in Latin America and 0.8 percent in the Asia Pacific region. This figure is a key gauge of a restaurant operator's health because it strips out the impact of newly closed and opened locations.

For the three months ended Dec. 31, Burger King earned $48.6 million, or 14 cents per share. That compares with $25 million, or 7 cents per share, a year earlier.

Removing one-time costs, earnings were 23 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 15 cents per share.

Revenue fell 30 percent to $404.5 million as a result of the refranchising. This still topped Wall Street's estimate of $375.3 million.

Shares of Burger King gained 43 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $17 in midday trading. Its shares have been trading near the upper end of their 52-week range $12.91 to $18.46.

For the year, Burger King Worldwide Inc. earned $117.7 million, or 33 cents per share. That's up from $88.1 million, or 25 cents per share, in the previous year. Annual revenue declined 16 percent to $1.97 billion from $2.34 billion.

Burger King Worldwide has more than 12,900 locations in 86 countries and territories.

Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III now equals in North American web use, study says

Fresh information from the Chitika ad network points to a near 50/50 split when comparing the North American web share of Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III, but overall, iOS devices still account for a majority of the market.

While the iPhone 5 still has a slight lead over the Galaxy S III, Chitika Insights' comparison data shows the Samsung handset has made up substantial ground since the last study was performed in October 2012.

The firm's research arm harvested the latest statistics from "tens of millions" of U.S. and Canadian smartphone mobile ad impressions seen across its network from Feb. 1 through Feb. 9.

According to the data, a direct comparison in web marketshare saw the iPhone 5 take a 51 percent stake, meaning the S III came up with 49 percent. In contrast, the October study found Apple's newest device to have an eight percentage point lead on Samsung's flagship handset.

Taking a look at broad overall impressions, the iPhone 5 accounted for 6.6 percent of traffic, compared to the Galaxy S III's 6.3 percent. Including all iPhone models currently being used in the U.S. and Canada, Apple took a 41.5 percent share of the market, representing a 4.5 percent drop from the time of the last study. Samsung boosted its overall presence to 20.6 percent over the same period, up from 17 percent in October.

Apple and Samsung dominated the market with a combined 62.1 percent marketshare, but that number is one percent below October's findings, suggesting that there is at least some churn taking place in the North American smartphone market.

It was recently reported that of Apple's smartphone web share, iOS 6 now accounts for 83 percent of all iOS traffic in North America. The stats are impressive given that the mobile OS was only released in September of 2012.

LA Lakers owner in hospital for cancer

By Agence France-Presse
Friday, February 15, 2013 7:18 EST

?

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who has been in failing health for the past year, has been hospitalized in intensive care for cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The 79-year-old was taken to hospital in July for ?dehydration? and underwent surgery a month later for an undisclosed illness.

The Lakers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It was not clear what form of cancer Buss is fighting.

Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 and has been in charge of the franchise for 10 of their 16 National Basketball Association championships.

Buss used to be a regular fixture Lakers games but has not been seen at any contests this season.

He has handed over control of the franchise to his son, Jim, who looks after the basketball side of the club, while his daughter Jeanie oversees the business end.

The Lakers have the highest payroll in the NBA at $100 million.

How Bilingual Babies Keep Languages Separate

Babies in bilingual environments can learn to distinguish the grammatical structures of two different languages at a young age, a new study finds.

The research shows that bilingual tots use qualities like pitch and duration of sounds to keep two languages separate.

And infants can perceive these differences between languages at just 7 months. "There are a lot of cues just at the surface level in language that babies can use to get a leg up," study co-author Janet Werker, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, told LiveScience.

Learning two languages can be challenging, especially when the two tongues have opposite word orders. For example, in English, "function" words (like "the" or "with") precede "content" words, for example: "the dog," "his hat," or "with friends." The content word also has a longer duration when spoken. In Japanese or Hindi, by contrast, the content word ("dog") comes first, and has a higher pitch than the function word ("the"). In most languages, function words occur more frequently than content words.

To understand how infants master languages?with different word orders, Werker and colleagues studied 7-month-old infants exposed to English and another language (such as Japanese or Farsi) at home, as well as infants from monolingual homes.

The researchers created a made-up language of 11 words that mimicked the function and content patterns of a true language, where function words occurred more frequently. During the experiments, the babies sat on their mothers' laps and listened to a constant stream of these made-up words.

Half of the babies heard words with differences in duration, while the other half heard words with differences in pitch. All of the babies heard two different "languages" ? one in which frequent words came before less frequent words, and the other in which less frequent words came first. [In Photos: How Babies Learn]

The two different languages were broadcast from different parts of the room, and researchers monitored how long the infants spent looking at the source of these sounds. Researchers interpreted a longer gaze to mean the baby was picking up on those differences in word frequency to tell the two fictional languages apart.

The scientists found that bilingual babies looked longer at the source of sounds that matched their expectation of word order, which suggested the infants were using the pitch and duration clues to keep the two languages straight.

For instance when the higher-pitched word came first, a cue that it was a "content" word, the bilingual babies gazed in that direction longer than if that high-pitched word came second. The same occurred for duration, with infants staring longer in the direction of word pairs in which the longer-duration word came second compared to cases in which it came first.

By contrast, monolingual babies showed no difference in looking times; in other words, they didn't pick up on differences in pitch or duration. The results help increase understanding of how syntax, which includes the order of function and content words, is acquired in languages.

The findings also help to debunk the misconception that bilingual infants face disadvantages in language development, according to Werker. "Even though it might look like a more complex task to learn two languages at once," Werker said, "babies do so quite easily."

The research was detailed Feb. 14 in the journal Nature Communications and presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston.

SEC Baseball Preview 2013: Whither David Perno and the Georgia Bulldogs?

It's an odd-numbered year, which could just mean that Georgia is going to the NCAA tournament. But even formulas can be wrong sometimes

Last Year: Georgia missed the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years despite getting off to an 8-0 start. Of course, when that first loss comes against Western Carolina -- well, you know that you might be in for a tough season. The Dawgs finished up just 31-26 and 14-15 in the SEC, and with a lot of bubble teams seeing their spots in the tournament pop in the final weeks, whatever small chance Georgia had of making it went out the window by the time the bids were announced.

What's Changed: The only pitchers with double-digit starts are gone, and that includes the generally good Alex Wood, who was 7-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 100 strikeouts even. But the other starting pitcher was Michael Palazzone, who had a forgettable final year in which he went 2-7 while compiling a 4.96 ERA. Would-be closer Pete Nagel was lost to Tommy John surgery, and a freshman will take over for him. On the offense, the biggest loss is Peter Verdin, who battled .307/.404/.364 in 2012; as the numbers might suggest, Verdin doesn't take a lot of pop with him.

What's the Same: The rest of the offense. Three of the four Bulldogs who batted better than .300 last year are back, and all of them have higher slugging percentages than on-base percentages (though just barely in a couple of cases). Curt Powell leads the way after hitting .355/.434/.448 last season, and home-run leader Hunter Cole (7) is also back. That Cole led with seven and had very little real competition for the title tells you that this is not a team that's going to slug its way to an SEC title. (Georgia's overall slugging percentage last season was .371.)

The Schedule: If Georgia wins the SEC East, it will only be because of how easy the cross-division schedule is. I'm kidding. But only slightly. There are a few tough non-conference games, including a home-and-home against Clemson and a pair of games against No. 16 Georgia Tech (Baseball America). In the SEC, the Dawgs go to College Station and get Arkansas at home, two series that won't be easy. But the consensus worst teams in the West are also on the slate, including a visit from Alabama and a trip to Auburn. The Dawgs' biggest competitors for the division, if they end up competing, are also neatly split down the middle, with Georgia going to Kentucky and South Carolina but getting Vanderbilt at home and closing out the season in Athens against Florida.

Prognosis: David Perno Equilibrium would suggest that this is going to be a tournament year for Georgia. The Dawgs went to the NCAAs in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 before making a breakthrough by going in back-to-back years when they went in 2009. Then didn't go in 2010, then went in 2011 and missed the field in 2012. Perno needs the swing. He hasn't won 40 games since 2008, and has only crossed that threshold three times in 11 season with the Dawgs. But it's hard to see that formula working out this year for Georgia unless the pitching pans out; if the Dawgs make it, it could be by the skin of their teeth.

New owl species makes biologists' heads spin

The discovery of a new owl species on an Indonesian island is described as 'a wake-up call for ornithologists.'

The newly-discovered Rinjani scops owl, or Otus jolandae.

A new species of owl has been found on an Indonesian island, identified by its unique birdsong. It had escaped scientific detection for so long partially because it looks very similar to a related species.

While on a field expedition in 2003, two members of a research team on opposite ends of the Indonesian island of Lombok independently realized that the owl's?calls were unique, according to a?PLOS ONE study?published today (Feb. 13).

That's quite a coincidence, especially considering that ornithologists didn't think Lombok was home to a unique species of owl despite years of study in the region, said George Sangster, study co-author and a researcher with the Swedish Museum of Natural History.

The new species has been dubbed the Rinjani scops owl, with the scientific name?Otus jolandae. It is locally common in the foothills of?Mount Rinjani, a large volcano on Lombok, living at altitudes up to 4,430 feet (1,350 meters), according to the study.

"I did not expect to find a new species, and certainly not one that is this common," Sangster told OurAmazingPlanet. "It is a wake-up call for ornithologists: there is still much to learn, and new species can reveal themselves even if you are not looking for them, and in places where no one expected to find something new."

To verify that the species was unique, researchers played this new birdsong to a group of Moluccan scops owls, a related and more widespread species. They didn't respond to the calls. In the area where the unfamiliar songs were heard, however, local Lombok owls responded by whistling back and approaching the speaker the songs were played from, according to the study. A closer comparison of the new bird and the related species revealed subtle body differences ? Rinjani scops owls have slightly different coloration and are slightly smaller, the study noted. DNA analysis confirmed it was a new species, Sangster said.

Owls are nocturnal and they use songs to communicate and identify one another. When?owls' songs?are significantly different, it's a good sign that they may be a different species, Sangster said.

Based on field work, studies of museum specimens and previous research, the scientists think this owl is likely unique to Lombok. Residents of nearby islands were unfamiliar with recordings of the owl, the only exception being one man who ended up being an immigrant from Lombok, the study found.

The owls are known to locals as "burung pok," which is "an onomatopoeic name reflecting the song note of the bird, which may be transcribed as 'pok' or 'poook,'" the authors wrote in the study. [Listen to the owl's call.]

While there are more than 250 known species of owls worldwide, there are undoubtedly many species yet to be discovered, according to the study.

Obama: It might be time to get rid of the penny

Obama participates in a Google chat (Screenshot via YouTube)President Barack Obama says it may be time to get rid of the penny.

The copper 1-cent coin has long been criticized for being costlier to mint than it is worth. And with Americans using pennies less and less, some have questioned why the government hasn?t stopped producing them.

Asked whether the penny should be nixed during an online chat sponsored by Google, Obama bluntly admitted, ?I don?t know.?

?It?s one of those things where I think people get attached emotionally to the way things have been,? the president said. ?We remember our piggy banks and counting out all the pennies and then taking them and getting a dollar bill or a couple of dollars.?

Obama added that the penny is a ?good metaphor? for the larger problems facing the federal government.

?This is not going to be a huge savings for government. But anytime we?re spending more money on something that people don?t actually use, that?s an example of something we should probably change,? Obama said. ?One of the things that you see chronically in government is it?s very hard to get rid of things that don?t work so that we can then invest in the things that do.?

But, he acknowledged, getting rid of the penny is not one of his administration?s highest priorities.

Pope Benedict XVI resigned 'for the good of the church'

Benedict XVI has made his first public appearance since his shock announcement earlier this week that he will abdicate.

Addressing thousands of faithful in his weekly audience hall meeting in the Vatican this morning, the Pope said he was stepping down ?for the good of the church?.

As the 85-year-old German cleric walked into the chamber he received a standing ovation with many of those present bursting into tears. A huge banner reading ?Grazie Santita? (Thank you Your Holiness) was strung up at the back of the hall.

Although he looked frail and spoke in soft tones, the Pope was clearly overwhelmed with joy at the response he had received from the crowds. On Monday Benedict opted to announce his resignation in Latin, but for today?s weekly audience he switched to the more accessible Italian. But the message he gave was the same ? that old age and a lack of energy meant there was simply no point continuing in a job that he believes a younger successor could do more successfully.

?As you know, I have decided to renounce the ministry that the Lord gave to me on April 19, 2005,? he said, to applause. ?I did this in full liberty for the good of the church.?

Benedict?s resignation speech on Monday sent shockwaves around the world. No Pope has given up the papacy for the last 600 years. But Benedict had previously been on record that Pope?s who struggle to do their job should consider stepping down.

During his time in the Vatican, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger witnessed first-hand the physical deterioration of his predecessor John Paul II and analysts say that experience helped forged his opinion that Pope?s should not carry on to the end if they cease to be able to do their jobs.

He will remain in the Vatican and his older brother George has insisted that Benedict will play no part in deciding his successor.

This morning?s audience was the start of a busy day for Benedict: he will also preside over Ash Wednesday services to mark the official start of the Catholic Church's Lenten season. The service is usually held in a church on Rome's Aventine hill, but was moved at the last minute to St Peter's Basilica to accommodate the crowds, although it will also spare the pope the usual procession to the church.

The Vatican insisted no serious medical ailment was behind Benedict's decision to retire, though it admitted for the first time yesterday that he has had a pacemaker for years and recently had it replaced.

The move sets the stage for a conclave by mid-March to elect a new pope. Benedict's final general audience will be held February 27.
