MONTREAL - The Dan Hawkins era lasted only five games in Montreal.
The Alouettes, who have struggled to a 2-3 record to start the season, announced Thursday that Hawkins has been fired.
Jim Popp will step in as head coach for the third time in his 18 years as general manager of the Canadian Football League club.
The firing came during a bye week in the Alouettes schedule. The team's next game is Aug. 8 against the Toronto Argonauts.
The offence, which was Montreal's strength under former coach Marc Trestman, looked disorganized and lifeless under Hawkins, who was coaching a professional team for the first time in his career.
Owner Bob Wetenhall asked Popp to step in.
"Jim is the person most responsible for the success we have had over all these years," Wetenhall said in a statement. "I feel confident that he is the best person to coach our team at this time and I am very appreciative of him being willing to make this additional contribution to our franchise.
"He has the respect of our players as well as mine."
Hawkins was hired Feb. 19 after working as a broadcaster. He had previously coached mainly U.S. college teams, taking Boise State to four Western Athletic Conference titles from 2002 to 2005 before compiling a disappointing 19-39 record at Colorado from 2006 to 2010.
It was the second time in a row Montreal hired a coach with no CFL experience.
But while it worked with Trestman, who won two Grey Cups in a five-year stint before being named head coach of the NFL's Chicago bears, Hawkins did not appear comfortable with the 12-man game.
He bowed out a winner, however. Despite the team's spotty play, the Alouettes are in second place in the weak East Division and are coming off a nervy 32-27 win over 1-4 Edmonton.
Popp first stepped in as coach to finish off a disastrous 2001 campaign under Rod Rust, but Don Matthews took over the following season.
He took over as coach again when Matthews fell ill during the 2006 season and brought the Alouettes to the Grey Cup game.
He stayed on for 2007, in which the rookie-laden club that was missing starting quarterback Anthony Calvillo for much of the season went 8-10 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Winnipeg.
It was the team's only losing record since it returned to Montreal after a 10-year hiatus in 1996. Popp has been general manager all of that time.
His CFL regular-season coaching record is 10-13, with a 1-3 mark in playoff games.
The team did not say if Popp would coach on an interim basis or when the search for a new head coach would begin.

Bob Schmidt ? Eagle Communications ? Part 1
By Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University.
?We have songs old and new, bright and blue. Here?s a song just for you.? Does that sound like something an old-time disc jockey would say on the radio? Today we?ll meet a man who began as a disc jockey but who had the vision and hard work to develop a successful communications enterprise.
Bob Schmidt is chairman and retired president and CEO of Eagle Communications in Hays, Kan. Bob has small-town roots, having grown up at the rural community of La Crosse, population 1,346 people. Now, that?s rural.
Bob went to college at Fort Hays State. While a student, he got a job on a new local radio station, KAYS, as a play-by-play announcer in 1949.
?I didn?t want to be a manager or a salesman,? Bob said. ?I wanted to be a disc jockey, to spin the records and call the ballgames.? Yes, on-air broadcasting is fun. Bob worked at perfecting his craft.
After graduation, he did become a manager for KAYS. He partnered with visionary entrepreneur Ross Beach to expand the business. In 1958, Bob was promoted to CEO of what is now known as Eagle Communications.
During the next 40 years, Eagle Communications of Hays would become a leader in the broadcast and telecommunications industry. ?We built or purchased 20 radio stations, four television stations, and twelve cable systems in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas,? Bob said. He eventually acquired the business from Ross Beach.
Bob Schmidt gave lots of leadership and expanded this communications business in a time of remarkable change. He saw a time when radio was declared dead, and then he saw its resurgence. He saw changes in the regulatory environment with less government interference from the FCC. He saw the growth of television and then the Internet.
?I?d like to say I envisioned all this, but I can?t,? Bob said. ?When you were in radio, you didn?t want to embrace television. It was a competitor, and the same for TV versus cable. But I had a partner who encouraged me. Perhaps I had a knack for looking for the opportunities that were just around the corner.?
Today, Eagle owns and operates 28 radio stations in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska and 30 cable systems in Kansas and Colorado.
In 1998, Bob Schmidt retired as president and CEO and began transferring ownership of the company to his faithful employees through an employee stock ownership plan. He remains chairman of Eagle Communications.
?That means I work for the employees,? he said. Bob also provides management of his 6,000 acre ranch northeast of Hays.
This remarkable individual is 86 years young. ?I?ve been married for 64 years and in broadcasting for 65 years,? he said. ?It?s been a very rewarding life.? His personal foundation supports many worthy causes in Hays and other communities, including scholarships and support for students.
One year while chairman of the CBS TV affiliate group, Bob was at a meeting in California and went to the set of hit TV show WKRP in Cincinnati. ?You?re Bob Schmidt, aren?t you?? someone said. ?I heard you give a talk at K-State.? It was none other than the star of the show, Gordon Jump, who had heard him speak back in Kansas.
?Communication is the bond that holds communities together, something that Bob Schmidt has always keenly understood,? said Steve Smethers, associate director of the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State. ?Through his pioneering leadership in developing radio, television, cable TV, telephone and internet services, Bob has provided communication channels that have kept information and interpersonal communications flowing for thousands of people in the rural Midwestern states.?
?We have songs old and new, bright and blue. Here?s a song just for you.? Yes, that?s a phrase like Bob Schmidt might have used when he was a disc jockey playing vinyl records on an old turntable. That personal touch to his customers has helped build this remarkable communications business. We commend Bob Schmidt for making a difference with visionary communication.

MANILA ??The Philippines' top diplomat said he and his Vietnamese counterpart discussed Thursday ?(Wednesday in Hawaii) how their governments can work together to deal with territorial disputes with China, including a possible sharing of information to better guard their territories from intrusions.
Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh agreed in their meeting in Manila to ask the regional bloc, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, to seek an early start of negotiations with China on a legally binding accord to prevent an armed conflict from breaking out in the disputed South China Sea. The territorial rifts were high in the agenda of the meeting, which also touched on increasing trade and a possible extradition pact.
Chinese diplomats and those from the 10-member ASEAN have agreed to soon hold consultations on how such a "code of conduct" in the South China Sea should be concluded. Del Rosario said ASEAN should insist negotiations should start immediately after the consultations.
"We want them to take a giant step on China," del Rosario told reporters after meeting with the Vietnamese delegation. "We decided among ourselves that consultation probably is not enough. We need to talk about negotiations."
Del Rosario said they also discussed China's recent offer to jointly develop disputed areas.
He said the Philippines and Vietnam have a similar position of not accepting any joint venture such as oil and gas exploration with China if Beijing insists that it has sovereignty over the areas to be jointly developed.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that Beijing would put aside territorial disputes and seek joint maritime development but insist it has sovereignty over such areas.
"We must insist that the sovereignty belongs to us, but we can shelve the disputes, pursue joint development, promote mutually beneficial, friendly cooperation, and seek and widen common interests," the state-run China Central Television quoted Xi as saying.
Many fear the long-unresolved territorial conflicts, which involve the three countries along with Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan, could spark an armed conflict and disrupt the region's economic growth.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - ArcelorMittal South Africa, a unit of the world's top steelmaker, reported a first-half profit loss as sales weakened and production dipped, and it said it expected the bleak outlook to continue.
Africa's biggest producer of steel, posted a diluted headline loss of 31 cents per share for the six months to end-June compared with 26 cents in the same period last year.
Headline earnings, the main profit gauge in South Africa, exclude certain one-off and non trading items.
While international prices appear to have stabilised, the company said lingering weakness in the domestic economy continues to hit steel demand.
"Domestic sales are expected to remain flat and any increase in steel prices will be more than offset by increasing costs," it said in a statement.
The company, which sells 90 percent of its steel in Africa, said steel sales dropped 16 percent and liquid steel production declined 9 percent, primarily due to a fire at its Vanderbijlpark operations in February.
"On the positive side, the weakening in the rand exchange rate in May provided a strong underpin to our export sales towards the end of the half year although the impact on shipments will only materialise in the third quarter," the company said.
Shares in ArcelorMittal South Africa have fallen 25 percent over the last 12 months, underperforming a 19 percent gain in the JSE's All-share index.
