By Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University.

?We have songs old and new, bright and blue. Here?s a song just for you.? Does that sound like something an old-time disc jockey would say on the radio? Today we?ll meet a man who began as a disc jockey but who had the vision and hard work to develop a successful communications enterprise.

Bob Schmidt is chairman and retired president and CEO of Eagle Communications in Hays, Kan. Bob has small-town roots, having grown up at the rural community of La Crosse, population 1,346 people. Now, that?s rural.

Bob went to college at Fort Hays State. While a student, he got a job on a new local radio station, KAYS, as a play-by-play announcer in 1949.

?I didn?t want to be a manager or a salesman,? Bob said. ?I wanted to be a disc jockey, to spin the records and call the ballgames.? Yes, on-air broadcasting is fun. Bob worked at perfecting his craft.

After graduation, he did become a manager for KAYS. He partnered with visionary entrepreneur Ross Beach to expand the business. In 1958, Bob was promoted to CEO of what is now known as Eagle Communications.

During the next 40 years, Eagle Communications of Hays would become a leader in the broadcast and telecommunications industry. ?We built or purchased 20 radio stations, four television stations, and twelve cable systems in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas,? Bob said. He eventually acquired the business from Ross Beach.

Bob Schmidt gave lots of leadership and expanded this communications business in a time of remarkable change. He saw a time when radio was declared dead, and then he saw its resurgence. He saw changes in the regulatory environment with less government interference from the FCC. He saw the growth of television and then the Internet.

?I?d like to say I envisioned all this, but I can?t,? Bob said. ?When you were in radio, you didn?t want to embrace television. It was a competitor, and the same for TV versus cable. But I had a partner who encouraged me. Perhaps I had a knack for looking for the opportunities that were just around the corner.?

Today, Eagle owns and operates 28 radio stations in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska and 30 cable systems in Kansas and Colorado.

In 1998, Bob Schmidt retired as president and CEO and began transferring ownership of the company to his faithful employees through an employee stock ownership plan. He remains chairman of Eagle Communications.
?That means I work for the employees,? he said. Bob also provides management of his 6,000 acre ranch northeast of Hays.

This remarkable individual is 86 years young. ?I?ve been married for 64 years and in broadcasting for 65 years,? he said. ?It?s been a very rewarding life.? His personal foundation supports many worthy causes in Hays and other communities, including scholarships and support for students.

One year while chairman of the CBS TV affiliate group, Bob was at a meeting in California and went to the set of hit TV show WKRP in Cincinnati. ?You?re Bob Schmidt, aren?t you?? someone said. ?I heard you give a talk at K-State.? It was none other than the star of the show, Gordon Jump, who had heard him speak back in Kansas.

?Communication is the bond that holds communities together, something that Bob Schmidt has always keenly understood,? said Steve Smethers, associate director of the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State. ?Through his pioneering leadership in developing radio, television, cable TV, telephone and internet services, Bob has provided communication channels that have kept information and interpersonal communications flowing for thousands of people in the rural Midwestern states.?

?We have songs old and new, bright and blue. Here?s a song just for you.? Yes, that?s a phrase like Bob Schmidt might have used when he was a disc jockey playing vinyl records on an old turntable. That personal touch to his customers has helped build this remarkable communications business. We commend Bob Schmidt for making a difference with visionary communication.

MANILA ??The Philippines' top diplomat said he and his Vietnamese counterpart discussed Thursday ?(Wednesday in Hawaii) how their governments can work together to deal with territorial disputes with China, including a possible sharing of information to better guard their territories from intrusions.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh agreed in their meeting in Manila to ask the regional bloc, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, to seek an early start of negotiations with China on a legally binding accord to prevent an armed conflict from breaking out in the disputed South China Sea. The territorial rifts were high in the agenda of the meeting, which also touched on increasing trade and a possible extradition pact.

Chinese diplomats and those from the 10-member ASEAN have agreed to soon hold consultations on how such a "code of conduct" in the South China Sea should be concluded. Del Rosario said ASEAN should insist negotiations should start immediately after the consultations.

"We want them to take a giant step on China," del Rosario told reporters after meeting with the Vietnamese delegation. "We decided among ourselves that consultation probably is not enough. We need to talk about negotiations."

Del Rosario said they also discussed China's recent offer to jointly develop disputed areas.

He said the Philippines and Vietnam have a similar position of not accepting any joint venture such as oil and gas exploration with China if Beijing insists that it has sovereignty over the areas to be jointly developed.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that Beijing would put aside territorial disputes and seek joint maritime development but insist it has sovereignty over such areas.

"We must insist that the sovereignty belongs to us, but we can shelve the disputes, pursue joint development, promote mutually beneficial, friendly cooperation, and seek and widen common interests," the state-run China Central Television quoted Xi as saying.

Many fear the long-unresolved territorial conflicts, which involve the three countries along with Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan, could spark an armed conflict and disrupt the region's economic growth.

ArcelorMittal South Africa posts H1 loss, outlook bleak

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - ArcelorMittal South Africa, a unit of the world's top steelmaker, reported a first-half profit loss as sales weakened and production dipped, and it said it expected the bleak outlook to continue.

Africa's biggest producer of steel, posted a diluted headline loss of 31 cents per share for the six months to end-June compared with 26 cents in the same period last year.

Headline earnings, the main profit gauge in South Africa, exclude certain one-off and non trading items.

While international prices appear to have stabilised, the company said lingering weakness in the domestic economy continues to hit steel demand.

"Domestic sales are expected to remain flat and any increase in steel prices will be more than offset by increasing costs," it said in a statement.

The company, which sells 90 percent of its steel in Africa, said steel sales dropped 16 percent and liquid steel production declined 9 percent, primarily due to a fire at its Vanderbijlpark operations in February.

"On the positive side, the weakening in the rand exchange rate in May provided a strong underpin to our export sales towards the end of the half year although the impact on shipments will only materialise in the third quarter," the company said.

Shares in ArcelorMittal South Africa have fallen 25 percent over the last 12 months, underperforming a 19 percent gain in the JSE's All-share index.

Pinterest's Mobile App Gets Path-Like Animations, Personalization Options Via New Pin Suggestions

photo 2Say what you want about Path and their previous transgressions, but it’s great to see other mobile applications borrowing the interface and animations Path popularized?through its stellar design.?Tumblr was one of the first big name apps to adopt Path-like pop-out animations?(round circles that appear when tapping to create a new post), and now, Pinterest is doing the same in an effort to make repinning, favoriting, and sharing pins easier for users. In an update to its iOS application, Pinterest has introduced a new interface design where users can press and hold on a pin in their feed, in order to make rounded action buttons appear. However, unlike on Path or Tumblr, Pinterest’s buttons don’t stay visible after you lift your finger – instead you have to slide your finger from where you originally pressed the pin, over to the button you want to use. Unfortunately, these new animations only show up on items others have pinned, that you now want to engage with in some way. Meanwhile, the process for adding a pin of your own is relatively unchanged – you push the bottom center button and choose what you want to pin from a standard menu offering options like “website,” “camera,” “clipboard” or just “cancel.” It’s almost as if Pinterest is experimenting with the idea of new interactions here, rather than rolling out a major interface upgrade all at once. By forcing users to press and hold, too, the new animations arrive as optional way of interacting with pins. However, for those mainstream users who are slow to change their ways (i.e., the majority of Pinterest’s user base), they can still pin and share and like from more obvious action buttons on an individual pin’s page itself. Pinterest’s mobile applications have seen other slow but steady improvements like this over the course of the year, with updates earlier this month which brought pin sharing to iPad and pin search, for example, plus previous updates which finally solved the problem of being able to pin websites, and the addition of things like enhanced pins with pricing info and availability (oh yes!), upgrades to group pin boards, push notifications, and new discovery mechanisms. Pinterest Moves Toward A Business Model Pinterest doesn’t make a lot of buzz about its mobile app updates, generally speaking, but it does when it matters. For instance, it’s worth noting that?Pinterest’s new pin suggestion feature?is launching on
